Paintings That Hold Story and Place

Each piece is an exploration of color, memory, and landscape. Through layered acrylic, collage, and expressive gesture, Susan Schapira creates immersive compositions that invite contemplation.

Acrylic/paper.  31x40 framed

Amaryllis Interrupted

On exhibit July and August 2026, with Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, Slater Museum, Norwich, CT.

Acrylic on paper. 32”x25.” Following a deep tradition of women and botanical paintings, this painting references the historical tradition of limiting women to certain acceptable subjects, just as women today are rarely allowed to be fully who they are. They turn to subterfuge to illustrate their meaning. One would assume that the glorious amaryllis is the star of this painting, but no less important are reminders of loss and wintering, the emptied seed pods and yellowing ferns. This painting is meant to be beautiful, but look closer and another reality emerges.

Acrylic/Paper. 28”x 21”

Rustbelt Reimagined

Acrylic/Paper. 28”x 21” If you turn this painting horizontally, you will see that it is an old plough, which I found rusting away in Brooksvale Park in Hamden, CT. Turning it vertically, this piece of old farm equipment becomes monumental and iconic. Rustbelt Reimagined invites us to view the decaying detritus of human industry as something reborn and alive. Curvilinear lines that form cogs and gears blur the distinction between realism and abstraction.

Acrylic on paper 19” x 25”

Litchfield Flamingo

8”x6. ” Acrylic on Canvasboard. This shiny plastic flamingo set in a private greenhouse, calls out the artificiality and forfeit of wildness in these spaces filled with nature.
